In some cases GVSU is required to confirm that the information provided on the FAFSA is correct; this process is called Verification. If you are required to complete the Verification process you will be contacted via email and your myBanner will be updated with the necessary requirements. All requested documents can be emailed, faxed, mailed, or dropped off at our office.

Requesting a Tax Return Transcript

You have three different options for requesting a Tax Return Transcript:

1. Online

  • Visit:
  • Click on “Get My Tax Record” 
  • Click on the blue “Get Transcript Online” button
  • If you have never used this tool through the IRS, you will need to go through the First Time User process.
    • First Time Users will need the following information for the tax-filer:
      • Full Name
      • Email
      • Birthdate
      • Social Security Number or Individual Tax Identification Number
      • Tax filing status
      • Current address
  • Once you have logged in, you will select a reason for the transcript i.e. “Higher Education/Student Aid”
  • From the “Return Transcript” box, choose the appropriate tax year
    • 2016-2017 academic year: 2015 taxes
    • 2017-2018 academic year: 2015 taxes
    • 2018-2019 academic year: 2016 taxes
    • 2019-2020 academic year: 2017 taxes
  • Your transcript will open up in a new window.

Note: You must have your pop-up blocker turned off.

2. Phone

  • Call (800) 908-9946
  • This may take 5-10 business days before the transcript is mailed.

3. Mail

  • Visit: to get a Form 4506-T
  • Complete the form and mail it to the IRS directly
  • This may take 5-10 business days once the form is received, for the transcript to be mailed
