Description:

Grand Valley’s American Sign Language & Culture Club and Phi Sigma Pi-Epsilon Psi invite you to Deaf for a Day, Grand Valley’s first deaf social. Light refreshments will be provided.

The purpose of this event is to open the eyes of Western Michigan to a different culture often overlooked. Although there is a large deaf and hard of hearing community, there is not a large interaction between the two worlds.  This event will allow individuals from the deaf and hard of hearing communities to educate the hearing community, as they share their experiences in the forms of presentations and language barriers.  Grand Valley faculty and students, along with the Western Michigan community, will be able to form a unique bond in a safe, non-discriminatory environment.  This will be Grand Valley’s first deaf social, an important stepping-stone in creating communication between the world of the deaf and hard of hearing and the world of the hearing.

The social will begin with several presentations, and at least one will be in sign language with a voice interpreter. The idea is for hearing people to experience being deaf/hard of hearing for a day, and for them to experience the communication barriers that exist. The event will end with a social where people can communicate using sign language or pens and paper.
